Alpe d’Huez Resort Overview

Perched at an altitude of 1,860m, Alpe d’Huez is a renowned ski resort, popularly known as the ‘Island in the Sun’ due to its sunny disposition. The resort peaks at 3,330m, offering majestic panoramic views of the French Alps. Boasting an expansive 250km of skiable terrain, Alpe d’Huez is part of the Grand Domaine ski area. 

The resort was developed following the 1936 Winter Olympics and since then, it has been a favourite amongst winter sports enthusiasts. From modern, high-end chalets to cosy, budget-friendly apartments, the resort caters to a wide range of preferences when it comes to accommodation. Most of which are ski-in-ski-out, offering easy access to the slopes. The ski season usually runs from early December to late April.

Skiing in Alpe d’Huez

Alpe d’Huez offers a skiing experience like no other, with an extensive 250km of pistes to explore. The ski terrain caters to all abilities. Beginners can find their feet on the gentle slopes around the resort centre, while intermediate skiers can enjoy the variety of long, cruising blue and red runs. 

For advanced skiers, the ‘Sarenne’ is a must-try. At 16km, it’s the longest black run in Europe. The Pic Blanc, the highest point of the resort, offers challenging off-piste opportunities, while the ‘Tunnel’ run is known for its steep, challenging start. 

Freestyle skiers and snowboarders can show off their tricks at the two snowparks, including modules, rails, boxes, and a half-pipe.

Alpe d’Huez offers a plethora of dining options, ranging from traditional Savoyard cuisine to international fare. Le Passe Montagne offers a gourmet menu in a cosy setting, while La Fondue en Folie is a must-visit for cheese lovers. For a quick lunch on the slopes, Le Spot offers stunning views and delicious food. 

How to Get to Alpe d’Huez 

The three closest airports to Alpe d’Huez are Grenoble (2h15m), Lyon-Saint Exupéry (2h30m), and Geneva (3h30m). Transfers from these airports are available via bus or taxi. If you’re travelling by train, the closest station is Grenoble, from which you can take a bus to the resort. For those driving, there are several paid parking lots available on the outskirts of the resort.
