Melchsee-Frutt is a picturesque ski resort that is situated at an elevation of 1,920m. Part of the Obwalden canton, Melchsee is a part of the larger Melchsee-Frutt ski area, which offers around 32km of skiable terrain. The resort is often praised for its reliable snow quality and is a popular choice for both locals and tourists alike, thanks to its expansive ski area and charming ambience.

Connected to neighbouring resorts such as Kerns and Stockalp via an efficient lift system, there is plenty of terrain to explore in Melchsee. Although the resort is particularly popular amongst intermediate and advanced skiers, it also offers several beginner-friendly runs and a snowpark.

Melchsee Ski Area

The Melchsee-Frutt ski area is divided into three main sections; Melchsee, Stockalp and Distelboden, each offering a range of different runs. The ski area consists of 32km of pistes, with a balanced distribution across all skill levels – 30% are blue, 50% red, and 20% black.

Beginner Skiing in Melchsee

Despite the resort’s reputation for more challenging terrains, Melchsee also features several gentle slopes suitable for beginners. Two main nursery slopes can be found at the base of the resort, ideal for those just starting out. There are beginner-friendly areas like the blue run from Bonistock to Melchsee to explore, once you’ve progressed from the nursery slopes.

Intermediate Skiing in Melchsee

Melchsee is a fantastic resort for intermediate skiers who are keen to challenge their skills. The resort offers numerous red runs, providing a plethora of options for those looking to advance their skiing abilities. Bonistock is a great area for intermediate skiers, offering a mix of wide blue and red runs. For those feeling more adventurous, the red run from Bonistock to Stöckalp is a must-try! The grading system in Melchsee leans towards the more challenging end, offering a great opportunity for skiers to push their limits.

Advanced Skiing in Melchsee

Melchsee is a paradise for advanced skiers, offering a number of challenging black runs. Perhaps the most well-known is the Balmeregghorn run, known for its steep incline and thrilling vertical drop. Another challenging option is the black run from Bonistock to Distelboden, which offers an adrenaline-pumping descent under the right conditions.

Off-piste Skiing in Melchsee

Melchsee is a haven for off-piste skiing, offering a range of exciting off-piste terrains. From steep inclines to wide-open bowls, there is plenty to explore. The area around Bonistock is particularly popular for off-piste skiing, offering a thrilling descent with stunning views. When venturing off-piste, it is always recommended to hire a local guide or instructor who can ensure your safety while also guiding you to the best spots.

Snowparks in Melchsee

Melchsee also offers a fantastic snowpark, located at the Erzegg lift. It is equipped with numerous features including kickers, rails, and boxes suitable for all abilities, from beginners to pros.
